Artist and producer Double Tiger, aka Jay Spaker, introduces a brand-new track, “Universal Love,” featuring Karim Israel of Arise Roots.

“Universal Love” is from Double Tiger’s upcoming sophomore album, The Journey, slated to release December 11 via Easy Star Records. The impending album includes an array of notable artists: Slightly Stoopid, The Movement, Ranking Joe, Elliot Martin (John Brown’s Body), Suckarie (New Kingston), and the above-mentioned Karim Israel.

According to Spaker, “This album is a blend of the many styles of reggae that inspire me. The previous one was straight rub a dub focused. When I got to L.A., I was in a more open place and started exploring other aspects I had always loved – like lovers rock, rockers – but never really messed with in my own writing.”

The album’s genesis occurred when John Brown’s Body went on break. Having recently moved from New York to L.A., the music assumed a SoCal vibe reflecting his new surroundings – the ocean, mountains, and West Coast cultural essence.

While he was putting the finishing touches on The Journey, Double Tiger went back to New York to be with his ailing father, who eventually passed on at the end of the summer. The emotion-ridden loss of his father, along with the pandemic putting a stop to all touring, is reflected in the album’s evocative title – The Journey.

“Universal Love” opens on a cool drum shuffle flowing into a contagious one-drop reggae rhythm topped by an eloquently crying guitar. A fat, popping bassline imbues the groove with heft, while delicious tropical vocals infuse the lyrics with the all-encompassing power of love. Interweaving textures of psychedelic flavors give the tune kaleidoscopic washes, at once tantalizing and lustrous.

With “Universal Love,” Double Tiger generates sultry reggae tinted by tinges of rock, shimmering with plush emotional commitment and charismatic vocals.
