Chris Garver, who is based out of New York’s Five Points Tattoo, talks about how he paints porcelain with Irezumi inspired paintings.
Known for his dedication and incredible mastery of Japanese tattooing, Chris Garver joins us on a trip to a pottery studio where he often goes to create stunning works of porcelain pieces. Partly an extension of his personal obsession with Irezumi iconography and Japanese mythology, painting on various clay forms has given him a way to experiment with new ideas. Without the pressure of having to create tattoos on skin without the slightest mistake, Garver mentions that this hobby is less stressful but still exciting since he loves to continually work with new techniques and materials.
Working with a friend who creates the pottery vessels, Garver paints each piece before it’s “fired”, which is the process in which clay and glazes are heated to extremely high temperatures before they’re considered finished and ready for use or display. Many of his pottery paintings play with iconic Japanese tattoo designs such as dragons, waves, Hannya, and similar, but each one takes on a very personal and unique flair as Garver continues to evolve his work within this art form.
Like many tattoo artists, Chris Garver is devoted to tattooing, but often finds that working with new creative outlets can help keep burn out at bay. Although pottery painting and tattooing may not seem closely connected to one another at first glance, these techniques can be symbiotic as far as inspiration goes. Creativity comes in many forms, and watching a legend like Chris Garver working in unfamiliar territory is a different take on what the artist life is like.
